We receive a lot of questions about what is important when traveling by ferry, what is allowed and what is not. That's why we've compiled an excerpt from your questions here. You can find more details in the hvv conditions of carriage, which also apply on our ferries (hvv fare: hvv joint fare and conditions of carriage).

How to Ferry???
Rules of conduct on board
How should I behave on a HADAG ferry? Here you will find the HADAG etiquette guide.
Smoking is prohibited on board – both indoors and outdoors. This applies to all ships.
No, unfortunately not. No other animals are permitted on board unless they are dogs (see next question) or are transported in suitable transport boxes.
In principle, yes, but only under the supervision of a suitable person. Furthermore, the dog must not disrupt the safety and order of the ship or disturb other passengers. Guide dogs accompanying blind persons are always permitted on board. Other animals may only be taken on board in suitable containers. Animals may not be placed on seats.
Yes, eating and drinking is allowed. Please leave your seat clean and either take your rubbish with you or dispose of it in the designated bins. On ships with drinks machines, there are also boxes available for collecting empty containers. Spitting out or throwing the shells of seeds, e.g. sunflower seeds, on the floor is prohibited and may result in you being asked to leave the ship.
Yes, beer may be consumed on HADAG ferries, provided that it does not disturb other passengers or disrupt operations. The consumption of alcohol is prohibited on other hvv modes of transport; see § 4 (2) No. 14 hvv Community Tariff.
Passengers board via the ramps. Passengers already on the ferry have priority when leaving the ferry. Boarding then takes place. Passengers with bicycles board and leave after the other passengers.
No, once the visual and acoustic warning signals sound, boarding is prohibited! The same applies to leaving the ferry!
Yes, in an emergency you can contact our captains via the intercom (marked with the word NOTRUF) in the passenger cabin.
Stay calm and be sure to notify our skippers via the intercom in the passenger cabin and follow their instructions. If possible, administer first aid until the ship reaches the pier where the ambulance has been called.
Our captains and other staff are authorised to assign passengers to a specific ship if this is necessary for operational reasons or to fulfil the obligation to transport passengers.
You are entitled to transport if there is a duty to transport according to the provisions of the Passenger Transportation Act and the legal regulations issued on the basis of this Act. The provisions of the Passenger Transportation Act specify the passenger capacity limit, which our skippers adhere to. Once this limit is reached, no further passengers may board. In such cases, you are not entitled to transportation and must wait for the next ferry.
Yes, all our ferries, except for the Reiherstieg ferry, have a passenger toilet on board. Especially during busy periods, it may happen that the toilet has to be closed at short notice, e.g. due to full tanks. We ask for your understanding.
Rules for carrying items on board
What am I actually allowed to take with me on a HADAG ferry? Are there any special rules? You can find all the answers here:
Yes, you are welcome to do so.
Yes, but bicycles must be stored in the designated area. The owner must remain with the bicycle and secure it appropriately. Bicycles are not permitted on the upper deck or in the seating area of the passenger compartment. The following applies here: consideration creates space!
Please note: Passengers with disabilities (walkers or wheelchairs), pedestrians and passengers with prams are allowed to board and leave first. In addition, consideration creates space! Please park your bicycle in the designated area and ensure that it is secured against falling over. Emergency equipment, in particular fire extinguishers, and emergency routes, in particular exits and ramps as well as other doors (e.g. emergency equipment cabinet, toilet or access to the engine room) must not be blocked.
Bicycles are defined as single-seat two-wheelers. Pedelecs with an electric motor that provides pedal assistance up to a maximum of 25 km/h are also considered bicycles. S-pedelecs and e-bikes, which can travel very fast even without pedalling, are equipped with an insurance plate and are not considered bicycles, but motorcycles.
Folding bikes
Folded bikes may be taken on board at any time, provided they do not inconvenience other passengers or jeopardise operations. The bikes must be folded in the designated area and thus be significantly smaller than an unfolded bike.
Tandems, tricycles, cargo bikes
Tandems, tricycles, cargo bikes and similar vehicles cannot be taken on board.
Yes. Please note: the slope of the ramp on board and the access to the pier depends on the tide (whether it is high or low tide) and can be greater than 6 per cent.
There is no entitlement to the carriage of items. Hand luggage and other items will be carried when the passenger is travelling and only if this does not jeopardise the safety and order of the operation and does not inconvenience other passengers. Folded bicycles are considered hand luggage. Dangerous substances and dangerous objects are excluded from transport, in particular explosive, highly flammable, radioactive, foul-smelling or corrosive substances, unpackaged or unprotected items that could injure passengers, items that protrude beyond the confines of the carriage, items that cannot be considered hand luggage due to their size or weight.
Folded e-scooters can always be taken on board as hand luggage. For e-scooters that are not folded, the bicycle transport regulations apply.
E-scooters are scooters with electric drive. They are self-balancing and have a steering or handlebar. The scooters fall under the new Small Electric Vehicles Ordinance. These vehicles can be up to 70 cm wide, 140 cm high and 200 cm long and weigh up to 55 kg, but most are significantly smaller and lighter.
Electric mobility scooters can be taken on hvv ferries where the landing stages are barrier-free. The Steinwerder landing stage does not meet these criteria.
Electric mobility scooters (also known as e-scooters, electric scooters or senior mobility scooters) are small, two-wheeled, open and electrically powered light vehicles that can only carry one driver (plus a small amount of luggage, e.g. shopping). They are mainly used by people with limited mobility.
There is no general entitlement to take e-scooters, electric mobility scooters or bicycles on HADAG ferries. In accordance with Section 11 (4) of the hvv's conditions of carriage, the operating personnel always decide on a case-by-case basis whether items are permitted for transport and where they are to be stored. If the safety and order of the operation cannot be guaranteed, e-scooters may be excluded from transport. As a general rule, the driving personnel themselves decide whether to allow transport depending on the specific situation on site (occupancy of the vehicle, use of the multi-purpose area by other mobility aids or prams, safety of third parties, etc.).
Please note: Passengers with disabilities (walkers or wheelchairs), pedestrians and passengers with prams are allowed to board and leave first. In addition, consideration creates space! Please park your bicycle in the designated area and ensure that it is secured against falling over. Emergency equipment, in particular fire extinguishers, and emergency routes, in particular exits and ramps as well as other doors (e.g. emergency equipment cabinet, toilet or access to the engine room) must not be obstructed.
Everything you need to know about tickets and departures
What kind of ticket do I need and where can I get it? You can find the answers here:

The surest way to find the right ticket is to use the Fahrplanauskunft: simply enter your connection on the hvv website or in the hvv app, and you will find the right single ticket below the search results. In this results screen, you also have the option of viewing product and price alternatives for this connection: the two links ‘Alternatives to single tickets’ and ‘Add-ons for groups and season ticket holders’ display further product and price overviews.
According to the hvv fare schedule, Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve are treated as Saturdays. This means that tickets with restricted usage times on weekdays from Monday to Friday can be used all day
No, bicycles can be taken on board free of charge. Please note: Passengers with disabilities (walkers or wheelchairs), pedestrians and passengers with prams are allowed to board and disembark first. In addition, consideration creates space! Please park your bicycle in the designated area and ensure that it is secured against falling over. Emergency equipment, in particular fire extinguishers, and escape routes, in particular exits and ramps as well as other doors (e.g. emergency equipment cabinet, toilet or access to the engine room) must not be blocked
Children under the age of 6 do not need a ticket.
Everything you need to know about departures from the Landungsbrücken
Do you also find the landing stages confusing? Don't worry—we've got you covered! Here are a few tips.
We explain this in this video. As a general rule, the hvv app shows you the departure point at the respective pier for each departure. Please also note the displays on site.
The HADAG ferries depart from bridges 1 to 3. Bridge 1 is located at the eastern end of the Landungsbrücken (towards the Elbphilharmonie), bridges 2 and 3 are located to the west of it.
Lines 72, 73 and 66 depart from Bridge 1.
Lines 61 and 75 depart from Bridge 2.
Line 62 departs from Bridge 3.
HADAG takes you from Bridge 1 (near the clock) at St. Pauli Landungsbrücken regularly from one and a half hours before the performance and, for afternoon shows, from one hour before the performance across the Elbe to the theatres. You can recognise the ships by the neon sign ‘HADAG Musical Shuttle Service’.
